Sankofa is an African word that originates from the  Akan, Twi, and Fante tribes in Ghana. It is often associated with the proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi," or “Sankofa w’onkyir”  The literal translation of the word and the symbol is

“it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.”

SAN  (return)

KO  (go)

FA (look, seek and take)

 

The Sankofa symbolizes the people’s quest for knowledge. It implies that the quest is based on critical examination, and intelligent and patient investigation.

Sankofa Center, Inc., located in New Orleans, LA, is run by Executive Director, Mr. Larry Hayes. We offer culturally competent psychotherapy to identify with and address the concerns that the people of New Orleans and other urban cities face. We provide community and individual-based counseling in-office and on-site. We provide culturally sensitive domestic violence focus groups as an individual and family therapy service.
